Why does my baby have a sour smell from the mouth?
If a baby smells sour from the mouth, it may be due to frequent regurgitation of acidic stomach content into the esophagus, a condition known as reflux. This happens because the sphincter at the junction of the esophagus and stomach is not yet strong enough. As babies grow older (8-12 months), the symptoms usually subside.
Babies with reflux may often spit up, but sometimes the stomach content only reaches halfway up the esophagus or the throat, and they swallow the stomach contents back down. Over time, the acidic stomach content that comes up into the esophagus and throat can cause pain and damage to the mucous membranes. Drinking may become painful as a result, causing the baby to feed restlessly and even refuse the breast or bottle. Some babies may want to drink frequently because it provides them with the most comfort; the milk helps neutralize the acid. Sucking on a pacifier or pinky can be soothing for a baby, as it stimulates saliva production, which neutralizes the acid. Often, you’ll notice that they are fanatic pacifier suckers. Due to the pain, babies with reflux may cry a lot, arch their backs, and roll their eyes. In severe cases, a baby may become completely limp and pale or have trouble breathing, turning blue. They may also have poor growth due to frequent vomiting and all the energy this process costs.
It is important for a lactation consultant to thoroughly investigate the cause of the reflux symptoms. Is it truly congenital? Because it could very well be related to breastfeeding management, allergies may be a contributing factor, and a tongue-tie can also cause or worsen reflux-like symptoms.
For reflux, you initially receive thorough explanations, posture and feeding advice, and occasionally, medication may be necessary through a pediatrician.
What are the benefits of breastfeeding for reflux?
- Breast milk is digested twice as fast as formula, so the stomach empties more quickly.
- Breast milk is less irritating than formula for the painful mucous membranes.
- Babies who want to feed more frequently for comfort can do so unlimited at the breast, while formula feeding has its limits.
